Woman in wheelchair struck and killed on Melbourne street

MELBOURNE — A woman in a wheelchair was fatally injured Thursday night when she was struck by an SUV as she attempted to cross a city street, Melbourne Police said.

The 55-year-old Melbourne woman, who was not further identified, was trying cross Hibiscus Boulevard at Medical Park Drive at about 6:27 p.m. Thursday, when a blue Audi SUV traveling east struck her, police said.

Melbourne Police arrived to find the woman in the road with life-threatening injuries. She was treated by paramedics at the scene and then transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

The 53-year-old driver of the SUV, who is from Palm Bay, was not charged and was not further identified. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. An investigation is ongoing.
