Since proactive climate initiatives are falling by the wayside within insurance companies, Nicole says there are ways for people to get involved to help those who live in high-risk areas:
• “Keep an eye on state bills addressing climate adaptation, disaster resilience, or insurance reform, and support these efforts through public comments or by contacting your representatives,” Nicole says.
• “Most states have insurance regulators overseeing industry practices,” Nicole adds. “Individuals can advocate for stronger consumer protections, transparency, and incentives for resilience through these bodies.”
• “Join consumer advocacy groups — organizations like the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) or local coalitions often campaign for fair insurance practices and climate adaptation support,” says Nicole.
• “And advocate for mandatory public disclosures of climate risk by insurers to increase accountability,” Nicole adds.
