Babygirl—Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson’s erotic thriller—is new in theaters. When will it be available to stream at home?
Written and directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl opened in theaters on Christmas Day. The logline for Babygirl reads, “A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern.”
Kidman plays the CEO, Romy, in Babygirland Dickinson plays Samuel, her intern. Babygirl also stars Antonio Banderas also stars as Romy’s husband, Jacob, while Sophie Wilde plays Romy’s assistant Esme.
Right now the only way you can see Babygirl is on the big screen, where it is playing in 2,115 theaters nationwide.
The first stop for Babygirl in the home entertainment market will be on digital streaming, via premium video on demand.
While some studios determine their PVOD release dates on how well their film is doing at the box office, others like Babygirl’s studio, A24, have more of a standard release pattern, which is about a month from the day it debuts in theaters until it arrives on PVOD.
For example, the indie studio released its horror thriller Heretic in theaters on Nov. 8 before making it available for purchase or rental on PVOD on Dec. 10.
In addition, A24’s romantic drama We Live in Timewhich didn’t get its widest release until Oct. 25 on 2,964 screens—it opened on five screens on Oct. 11 and expanded to 985 on Oct. 18—pivoted to PVOD a just over a month later on Nov. 29.
While A24 has had some of its films like the Rachel Zegler horror flop Y2K make a quicker debut on PVOD—the film was in theaters for 16 days before it arrived on digital streaming on Dec. 24—it’s more likely Babygirl will follow A24’s standard PVOD release pattern.
As such, the film should arrive for digital purchase and rental sometime around Jan. 24 or Jan. 28., since new PVOD releases typically take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Upon making its debut on PVOD, viewers can expect to purchase Babygirl on such digital platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV and VUDU.
New PVOD purchase prices tend to run anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99, while rentals on digital—which are good for a 48-hour period—generally run from $14.99 to $24.99.
Which Streaming Subscription Service Will Feature ‘Babygirl’ First?
Since A24 has a deal in place with Max, Babygirl’s first home for streaming video on demand will be on the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform.
You must be a Max subscriber in order to watch Babygirl when it arrives on Max. The streaming service offers a streaming package for $9.99 per month with ads or $16.99 per month, viewers can get programming without ads.
The streamer also has an ad-free package for $20.99 per month, where the content is presented in 4K Ultra HD.
Typically it takes just over three months from the time an A24 film opens in theaters before it arrives on SVOD on Max. For example, A24’s horror thriller MaXXXinewhich opened in theaters on July 5, arrived on Max 98 days later, on Oct. 18.
However, it took another A24 film—the drama Janet Planet—just over four months from its widest release in theaters on June 28 to make its SVOD debut on Nov. 1.
If Babygirl follows the same three-month-plus release pattern as MaXXXinethen viewers can expect to see the film on the streaming service on March 25 or shortly thereafter. If it follows the same pattern as Janet Planetthen it should arrive on Max sometime around April 25.
