Weekend And Final Round Sony Open 2025 PGA Leaders, Stats, Matchups And Odds

The 2025 Sony Open continues into the weekend with some longshots on the top of the leaderboard into Round 3. A total of 72 players made the cut at -3 under par, and the co-leaders are Patrick Fishburn (-10) and Denny McCarthy (-10), who shot 65 and 66 Friday on the Par 70 Waialae CC course.

The low round of the tournament was shot Friday by 400/1 longshot Kensel Hirata, who fired a 63. The 24-year-old from Japan is making just his 6th PGA Tour start, and has made his first cut. He has five international wins, and had missed the cut at Q-school by 1-stoke.

PGA Tour’s Top Putter Denny McCarthy Changes Putters

Following last year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland, Denny McCarthy was ranked No. 1 on Tour in strokes gained putting. Through two rounds at the Sony Open, McCarthy is No. 3 in the field in SG: Putting behind Fishburn and Lee Hodges. The 31-year-old has yet to win on Tour in 190 tournaments, but looks poised to break through soon in 2025 as an elite putter. Data golf tournament stats show McCarthy’s Approach stats are top-5 through two rounds at the Sony Open, and he’s tied with Fishburn in strokes gained Total followed by Eric Cole and Paul Peterson.

McCarthy has finished in the top-4 in strokes gained/putting on the PGA Tour in five of the past six seasons, including finishing first in the category twice. But McCarthy changed putters ahead of the Sony Open from a Scotty Cameron GoLo N5 to another Scotty Cameron model with a new insert, grip and length.

“Yeah, feels really good. I’ve made a lot putts from mid-length and a few of the longer length ones.” McCarthy said in Friday’s post round presser while acknowledging on Thursday’s appearance on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio that he’s using a new putter.

Patrick Fishburn is 32 years old and playing in his 28th PGA Tour event. He’s yet to win, but said Friday that he’s “hit a lot of fairways and feel really comfortable with the putter and rolling the ball really well.” Fishburn said he enjoys playing in the wind, and “this is a tricky course depending on the direction of the wind, and it requires you hit different shots and I think it’s just a lot of fun.”

Canadian Corey Connors was one of the top favorites to win ahead of the Sony Open. But he had a terrible two rounds putting, and his streak of 31 made cuts in a row ends in Honolulu. Last week’s Sentry tournament winner Hideki Matsuyama was the favorite to win the Sony Open, and he’s -4 under par and six strokes behind the co-leaders.

The 2023 Open Championship winner Brian Harman (-7) is challenging and doing his best work Tee-to-Green while being the only player without a bogey through two rounds.
