Former BYU basketball player killed in I-15 rollover crash

BLUFFDALE, Utah (ABC4) — The man killed in a rollover crash on I-15 near the Point of the Mountain on Thursday has been identified as Jake Shoff, a former BYU student-athlete on the Men’s Basketball team.

Utah Highway Patrol believe Shoff, 46, experienced a medical emergency that led to him being involved in a four-vehicle crash.

Shoff was reportedly behind the wheel of a Mercedes G63 and driving “recklessly at a high rate of speed” before veering to the left for an unknown reason, according to Utah Highway Patrol. The Mercedes rear-ended a Nissan Sentra before colliding with the concrete center median veering back right and sideswiping a Ford Escape.

Finally, the Mercedes crashed into the driver’s side of a Chevrolet box truck before rolling on its side and coming to a stop.

Emergency crews extricated Shoff from the Mercedes and performed life-saving measures. Unfortunately, Shoff died at the scene due to his injuries.

Shoff played Men’s Basketball for the Cougars starting in 2001 until 2004, appearing in 57 games. BYU said he helped take the Cougars to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

In a statement, BYU Athletics said Shoff was instrumental in helping the Cougars finish the regular season on an eight-game win streak.
